for ubuntu distro you need to make scripts runnable
chmod 755 linux-3.2.0/debian/scripts/*
Patch it as needed
patch -p1 < ../patch
Build and install
make-kpkg --initrd --jobs8 --append_to_version +drm kernel_image
dpkg -i ''your kernel package''.deb

Reboot or
sudo modprobe -r apple_gmux

Get the max value for your brightness (mine was 82311)
cat /sys/class/backlight/gmux_backlight
then

Reboot or
modprobe -r apple_bl
modprobe apple_bl
